At times we celebrate our success,
And we get used to triviality;
Not all of us grow wise with years,
Self-criticism is not our reality.

We want our homes to be well off and sound,
We wish our dreams come true, as it appears.
«Well, am I any worse?» — we hear all around.
«Well, am I any better?» — no one hears.

Óæå ëè ñâåòî÷ ðàçóìà çà÷àõ,
È ÷òî ñ ëþäüìè ïðîñòûìè ñòàëî?
Çàáîòèìñÿ î ïèùå è âåùàõ,
Î ðàçóìå çàáîòèìñÿ òàê ìàëî.

È êòî-íèáóäü ãëÿäèòñÿ ïðîñòàêîì,
Ñâîè äîñòîèíñòâà îöåíèâàÿ ëîæíî.

Ïðèêèíóòüñÿ ðàçóìíûì íå âîçìîæíî.

The light of wisdom, is it really dead?
The common people, what’s the matter with them?
We care for clothes and our daily bread,
But we don’t care much for wisdom.

Somebody makes as if he were «a simple one»
Appraising his good traits without reason.
One can pretend to be a silly man,
But one can never feign a man of wisdom.

Some things repeat themselves, I hear.
I lived like anyone on earth
Until I got to the idea
That I had lived before my birth.
Without thinking of life’s graces,
I may have lived in ancient worlds...
Not in a flat nor suchlike places,
But , maybe, somewhere in the woods.
But life goes by, so does decomposition,
There’s nothing after, anyhow.
But, there maybe a repetition,
Perhaps, in many years from now?
There are so many things in being!
There is no counting them all.
If every little thing is living,
Then how can nature make each soul?
Who knows, we’ve probably been fitted
Into our own former shells,
But conscience cannot be repeated,
So we don’t recognize ourselves.
The voice of ancestors still calls me,
Into the past where I can stay.
I have a ray of hope that warms me:
Maybe, I’ll live again some day?

I thought I comprehended something,
And if I always learnt I’d see the light.
A man once said: «I know that I know nothing»,
The great philosopher was right.

As I got deep into the essence
Of things, I lost my «wisdom» touch...
The youth! They’re quick to make assessments
Without really knowing much.
